"Perhaps the most famous of all the horned marvels was Ripley’s
‘Human Unicorn’. In 1930, a Chinese farmer from Manchukuo was
discovered by an expat Russian banker. The Russian was able to take a
picture of the man and he sent the snapshot off to Robert Ripley of
‘Believe It Or Not!’ fame. Known only as Wang, or sometimes referred to
as Weng, the farmer was normal in every respect except fot the fact
that he possessed a fourteen-inch spire-like horn growing from the back
of his head. Ripley offered a huge cash reward to anyone who could produce
Wang for an appearance in his Odditorium. However Wang disappeared from
the public eye in the early 1930′s and was never heard from again.
The causes for human horns are varied. Most often it is
attributed to benign calvarial tumours, such as osteomas, and an
aggressive variant of a condition known as cornu cutaneum.
It is important to note that ‘horns’ can grow anywhere on the human
body but that the condition manifesting on the head only is a rarity."
Lentini had 3 legs, 2 sets of genitalia, 16 toes, and 4feet.
(fourth foot growing from third leg). One of Lentini’s stunts was to
kick a football with his third leg. He also used the extra appendage for
a stool. He married and had 4 children.
After Pieter Hugo saw a Nigerian newspaper with a picture in it, taken out of a cellphone showing a group of men walking down the street with a hyena in chains, and the caption "the streets of Lagos" with the report that the men were bank robbers, bodyguards , drug dealers and dept collectors , he got in contact with a niderian reporter wich said he knew the " Gadawan Kura" . They went to Abuja to meet this by myths surrounded group that was living on the periphery of the city in a shantytown. A group of men, a little girl, three hyenas, four monkeys and a few rock pythons.It turned out that they were a group of itinerant minstrels , performers who used the animals to entertain crowds and sell traditionell medicines.They were all realted to each other and practising a tradition passed down from generation to generation.
While my stay in Essaouira i had the luck to live between the christian Cemetery , the Jewish Cemetery and the Prison ! Sadly i didnt made it to the Jewish one but here are some pictures from the christians....
